Abstract
Many factors can make patients to visit emergency room (ER), so it is difficult to predict ER visit volume. Not much studies have been done to identify factors which have influence on patient¡¯s visit volume to ER. Under the assumption that 5 day workweek can change the pattern of ER visit, we performed a retrospective study on changing pattern of ER visit before and after the introduction of 5 day workweek. 10,225 patients visited ER from August 1 to December 31 in 2004 before the introduction of 5 day workweek, while 11,421 patients visited ER from August 1 to December 31 in 2005 after the introduction of 5 day workweek. After several analysis, age, a day of the week and discharge pattern were identified as meaningful factors. However we are not sure that the 5 day workweek influenced these factors independently. It is thought that further
study will be necessary to improve the effectiveness of ER management.
